It's finally Springtime in
Connecticut, and for the
first time, I took advantage of attending the First
Convention of the R. John Wright Company in
Albany on the
27 -30th of May. We
had the best time.
On day one of the Convention, we took
a full day tour of Vermont, visiting The Old First Church,
where Robert Frost is buried, The Bennington Museum, where
we not only enjoyed seeing original paintings by Grandma
Moses and other artists but we were also able to visit the
museum shoppe and buy some unique paintings and bronzes
replicating some shown in the museum.
Our next stop was the Pottery Store in
Bennington
where the original pottery is made, and again, we had the
time to browse and buy some unique pieces of pottery to
take home with us. By this time, we
were hungry and it was lunchtime. We
stopped for our catered luncheon at the Historic Hubbell
Homestead, where we kicked off our shoes and had a
delightful luncheon overlooking the beautiful
Vermont
scenery and getting to know each other.
Did I mention how much fun it was being on
a bus filled with doll collectors!

After
our luncheon, we got back on the buses and we were off to
the R. John Wright factory. John and
Susan gave us a personal tour, showing us the room where
they get their inspiration from, filled with pictures and
colorful books, and the room where the first prototypes
are sculpted and created. We also
joined the men and woman in their workshops, air brushing
the felt fabrics for the dolls, pressing the fabric molds,
stuffing the pieces, and making the floral accessories
used on some of the dolls. In another
part of the factory, we were shown a short clip on some of
the achieved dolls of the past.
Before we left the factory, we visited the showroom filled
with retired dolls - that some of us never had the
opportunity to see in person. But, the
best part - we were able to
purchase many of the pieces on display. Needless
to say, we left the showroom with a lot of empty spaces on
their shelves and our bus was beginning to get a little
crowded with all our green shopping bags.

The next couple of days were filled with feature length
movie screenings, luncheon and dinner events with special
favors, salesrooms, doll competitions and Kate Greenaway
exhibits and workshops.
On Saturday, our last day of the convention, we ended with
a delightful closing banquet. At this
banquet we received the most BEAUTIFUL
Convention souvenir doll, Rebecca, from the new Kate
Greenaway series made especially for us.
We were all in awe at the end of this dinner,
because this doll could not have been more beautiful and a
more perfect end to our most enjoyable first convention of
R. John Wright.
